The excitement of getting ready for a fun weekend trip—visiting friends or family, or just a weekend adventure—is hard to beat. The one thing that can slow you down, though, is packing. But with an organized approach, getting your luggage together can be a simple and worry-free process.
Planned Activities The first thing you need to do when planning your packing is to think about what you’re going to be doing. This may seem obvious, especially if you’re heading to the beach or going to a wedding. But if you’re visiting your family, for instance, your weekend activities might not be so obvious.
If you won’t be in charge of the weekend’s activities, give your host a call and find out what activity options you need to be ready for. Then take a moment and think of everything you need. Also think of what pieces of clothing, shoes or equipment can be used for more than one activity.
Making A List Now that you have an idea of what you may need, write down everything you plan on packing. We’ve created a downloadable packing list to get you started. Then take this list and go over it one more time to make sure you’re not forgetting anything—and that you’re not packing too much.
Start your list with the following items:
1. Clothes
Shirts
Pants
Underwear
Socks
Pajamas
2. Toiletries (be sure to follow airline restrictions concerning liquids if you’re flying)
Toothbrush & toothpaste
Face wash
Hair styling products
Eyeglasses/contacts
Towels
3. Accessories
Belt
Shoes
Jewelry
Jacket
Umbrella
Take two pairs of shoes—one casual and one dressier. Wear one of the pairs while you travel and pack the other. Also, keep all of your toiletries in a toiletry bag, or even a freezer bag—if one of them, like your toothpaste, accidentally opens up, it won’t get all over your clothes.
Don’t Forget Here are some things to keep in mind while you’re choosing which clothes to pack:
Choose clothes that you can easily mix and match. Neutral colors work well and match with a lot of other colors.
Choose pants or dresses that can be easily dressed up (with nice shoes and a nice shirt or top) or dressed down (with sneakers or sandals and a t-shirt).
Leave expensive jewelry and other expensive items at home.
Make sure you pack a rain jacket. There’s no proof of this, but it seems like when you do, it won’t rain, but if you forget to pack one, it always rains.
Plan For Fun
With the basics packed, now it’s time to put in some of the things you’ll need for the activities of the weekend. Write these down in the blank spaces on the right hand column of the packing list you downloaded.
Check the weather of the place you’re visiting, and then pack any shorts, swimsuits or winter gear you’ll need.
If you know you’ll participate in some specific sports or games, pack the equipment you’ll need.
If you’re going to a wedding or another event that you’ll need to dress more formally for, double and triple check that you have everything you need. It’s easy to forget things that you don’t wear every day.
One last benefit of a well-packed travel bag is that it is easy to carry and store in your car or on a plane. And knowing that you have everything you need and plenty of flexibility, you can concentrate on having a fun weekend.
